Take a narrow winding road from either Saint Cézaire or Fayence and you'll find yourself in the village of Mons. At an altitude of 814 meters, Mons is one of the highest of the hilltop villages in the region, located at the at the foot of  "Mont Lachens" in the Var (1 715 m). This fortified village has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and remains of many dolmens can still be visited here. In the 10th Century, a colony of Ligurians, from the region of Vintimiglia in Italy, known as the "Figouns" settled in Mons. And, in 1113 the church of Mons, dedicated to Saint Victoire, was built in the heart of the château. The village resisted several epidemics of the plague in the 15th and 16th century, developing progressively, and a new church was builit in 1260 which would be enlarged in the following centuries. From its high altitude, Mons offers visitors and exceptional panoramic view over the Esterel Mountains, the Maures and of Corsica.

Allow yourself to be seduced by the charm of this medieval village, itswinding streets, and its friendly population. Several fine restaurants and shops have opened in recent years, making this the perfect destination for a relaxing weekend exploration. Be sure to drop in on Robert Audibert in his workshop where he has been building models from matches for the past 60 years, including several impressive models of sailing vessels and warships, and model of the village of Mons.
